Yes, I am using GRUB and I followed your instructions to run sytem-config-display as root from the command line.  It had me configured to be using a CRT monitor.  Therefore, I selected an LCD monitor and rebooted.  However, my display seems to be the same: I still get a double image.  
 
I do not know how to interpret the xorg.conf file but one things stands out as bizarre to me:  
	ModelName    "KDS Visual Sensations VS-19SN"  
Is incorrect.  That is an old monitor that I used two years ago.

Copy existing xorg.conf to xorg.conf.old. Then edit xorg.conf. Change what I've highlighted in red. Save and type startx. See what you get.
