Hi,
Nice reviews but there is several mistakes I think. It would be nice if you could make some update on the review in order to give a true look of SuSE 10.0
- The review tell that the retail edition contains more packages as the OSS one. Please note that there is a free DVD of SuSE 10.0 named "eval" but trully free and usable.
Moreover, the extra packages could be installed by adding an install source to Yast
- The review tell that the update item should be at the top of the KDE menu. While it's true that this is more visible, as in MS Windows, but when you install SuSE and are logged in for the fist time, soon there is a pop-up message that ask to configure the automatic check for new updates.
- You tell that there is no MP3 support in SuSE. I'm not 100% sure but it seems I've read that there is stock MP3 support (almost in Amarok). I can't verify cause I've already installed the win32 codecs...
I think the MP3 support could be in the eval version, free as in beer ;o) even if not in the OSS edition. So, when adding the good package from Yast, you should have it.
- For the intel 2200bg wifi card, I've no problem at all, making next / next. It is automatically configured with DHCP and I didn't need to highlight it.
And I have a lot of settings for it, even the WPA support during install ! Nothing similar on others distros yet !
Perhaps the OSS version of SuSE didn't contain the firmware ? You should really give a try to the true SuSE release, not the OSS !
Even with SuSE 9.3 it was perfect with the same hardware and we have the same ! If there is really a problem with yours, the best thing to do is to participate in the dev process of SuSE. I've reported several bugs related to WIFI and PCMCIA during the dev, and I have a perfect fonctionnal computer with SuSE 10.0.
For the wireless icon, there is no wireless item under YAst cause it is set in the NIC setup. The system should detect if this is a WIFI card or not, and for me, it do it well.
Else, it's a nice review but you should update to tell the extra packages can be installed anf that WIFI is not OK for you but for other Centrino owners as me, it's perfect.

I'm hooked, and as a current SuSE 9.0 user, I think it's time to upgrade, so I'll start downloading the CDs on Saturdauy. Question is: should I get the OSS version or Eval version considering what has been said above? Any ideas?

I think the answer is clear ;o) If you are not a purist of 100% free as in free speech distro, so if you don't mind if there is proprietary components like Acrobat, Java, Real or Flash, then you make a better deal download directly the eval version.
Moreover, perphaps is there proprietary firmware (eg for the WIFI) directly in it and not in the OSS one ?
Eval is a curious name as it is a full product not limited in the time. It's the true SuSE. The only thing is there is some packages not on the CD / DVD but on the mirrors (majoritary some developpement libs and localisation packages).

thanks for your comments nooky59
do me a favor and clarify this point:

i do try to cover as much as i can in a review in the short space of time i have to write it, but of course i can't please everyone, as regards mistakes, i was reviewing the OSS version and i wanted others to know what to expect from that version. I don't think that was a mistake at all. The eval version is NOT an OSS version and of course, the experience may be different.
i'm glad you read it and i'm glad you pointed out those points for others to learn
more info about the eval cd here

perhaps i should write a review on that also,
or if others would care to write the review, i'll publish it here on linux-noob.com/review

Hi,
To clarify this point, here is some links :
http://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/SuSE-Linux/i3...x10.0-GM-Extra/
http://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/SuSE-Linux/i3...t-source-extra/
I let you add it to the Yast install source and look what there is inside thoose repositories ;o)
Your review is very nice but it's true that the SuSE offer is quite complex with 2 products and as a lot of Linux newbies will perhaps choose a distro on the reviews referenced by Distrowatch, it's very important that readers know they can have the same complete OS for free (even if it's good to buy it too ;o)).
For the WIFI, it's fun cause another review report such a problem but if you did it with the OSS, it could be nice for you to try with the Retail. I don't think the firmware is OSS compatible (as on the pure Debian, you must compiled the driver later after the install and it was not bundled in the OSS dev releases beta & RC of SuSE 10.0. I had to install the RPM later).
If you have the time to do this and change just a little your review if your WIFI works perfectly with it, it could be nice to point the differences in this area between the OSS and the retail one.

Thanks for the advice about SUSE OSS and Eval, I'm downloading the (supposedly Eval version) of SUSE 10 now.
Should be good :)

Well... it took me a while to figure out how to get the things working, but this is defintiely a welcoming release in that the networking works a whole lot better (i.e. I could use NetworkManager to... well... manage my connection and auto-switch from wired to wireless when it's necessary)!

Well, as of this lunchtime I'm through 3/5 of the discs, and I can't wait to give SUSE 10 a try. I only have 1 MB broadband, but it wasn't long ago that I had 56k... :)

I have now downloaded and installed SUSE 10, and it is great. I'd never realised what had changed while I'd been in SUSE 9.0 :), KDE looks so much better and sleek.
I've posted a couple of (post-install) screenshots, if you want to have a look. They are 1280x960.
Screenshot 1 - The GIMP and FreeCiv (great game)
Screenshot 2 - Konsole, Firefox, Quanta and Konqueror
Only one issue I had, the default installation of Apache put it here there and everywhere (ie in /srv, which I'm not used to), so I uninstalled the SUSE built version and compiled my own set of Apache 2.0.55, PHP 5.0.5 and MySQL 5.0.15 (in /usr/local).
