Ok im a first time user. i have used knoppix on my current setup. i like it its neato. much better than winxp. i have another system, ive used knoppix on it and it worked well. however i want a system that i dont have to boot from cd everytime i want to use it. however, i dont know what to use, should i use redhat, debian, or any other version. this is going to be a linux only system. one that i can use instead of windows.

question is which one to download? im not going to use it for any networking purposes than to use a usb adapter for wireless. i will be using open office, and some music editing. so which one is the best, easiest to use.

thanx

I need to upgrade PHP 4.3.7 to PHP 4.3.8 for security reasons, some kind of 'Nasty remote hole in PHP', and I have Apache 2.0.50. Now, my question is: How do I uninstall PHP and install the latest version, I think uninstalling was something like

or something similar (make clean?). and do I need to uninstall/reinstall Apache for the upgrade to work correctly ?

Thanks :)

Note: I'm shutting down my web server, is this paranoia?

I have Fedora Core 2 installed. I have pppoe set and running but sometimes when I cold boot into FC2, pppoe just wont start, although I see the lights on modem and NIC blinking. When I type /usr/sbin/adsl-status it says

Code: adsl-status: Link is down (can't read pppoe PID file /var/run/pppoe-adsl.pid.pppoe)

to fix it, it just takes to reboot but it is annoying to reboot every time I cold boot into my system. Maybe anyone can come up with some kind of solution.

P.S. I tried google'ing but could come up how to format my search o_O

Since I'm working helpdesk tickets and I get to see a lot of server problems that come in, I am going to dedicate a section of this to Linux-Noob.com

Not sure how this is going to work, but I want to have some fun with this.

My goals:

1. Help linux-noob users understand the difference between the english language and the "help desk" lingo.

2. Make fun of stupid tickets, both on the end user and help desk side of things.

3. Just laugh.

I think those are good to start with... Maybe I'll come up with some more later on. :)
