  fedora core 2 installed!
Posted by: Guest - 2004-07-31, 10:55 AM - Forum: Fedora Core Release 2 - Replies (6)

hi, i've just installed fedora core 2 on my clean system wanting to know more about linux... and i've got quite a lot of questions so if anyone couldanswer some of them that would be real nice :)

1.i guess that the drivers installed by default for my system aren't the most up to date, is there a way to check every drivers' version, like a Hardware manager on windows ? and is there a how to for driver installation ?

2. could anyone please explain to me the way linux filesystem works ? i see a lot of directories but none make sense to me, bin, usr, bin inside user, boot, dev etc.... anyway to easily explain it ?

3. there's a flashing red ball in the tray, it looks like it's an up2date program that patches my packages, but it crashes, anyway to do this manually ?

4. what are the most common used programs and commands, is there list of commands for the terminal ?

5. i heard about kernel recompiling, what is it about ?

if any of these questions are answered else where, bare with me please :]

thanks in advance to those who answer some of the questions

  MPlayer Occasional Subtitles. How?
Posted by: japher - 2004-07-24, 12:28 PM - Forum: Audio and Video - No Replies

hi all,

does anyone know how to make mplayer play the occasional subtitles necessary for films like the godfather or kill bill?

if my dvd command is: mplayer -slang en dvd://

then this would give constant english subtitles, but what i need, is subtitles only when the foreign langiage is spoken. this works on a normal dvd player (of course), but it also works fine in xine. is it possible to get mplayer to do the same?

if the command is just: mplayer dvd://

then i get no subtitles at all even if, for instance, someone in the godfather is speaking italian, of someone in kill bill is speaking japanese.

anyone else have this working correctly?

  mplayer garbled screen [screenshot]
Posted by: japher - 2004-07-20, 12:17 PM - Forum: Audio and Video - Replies (4)

hi guys,

i have a problem with mplayer when trying to play dvds. the command mplayer dvd:// brings up the player, sound works fine but the picture is totally mangled.

the picture moves (and obviously does bare some relation to the actual dvd playing) but is a totally messed up version of what it's supposed to be. i haven't been able to capture it (as when i try, the screen doesn't show up in captures), but i have made this picture which looks pretty much exactly like the actual behaviour:

screenshot

the funny thing is, xine plays dvds perfectly, so it seems unlikely that i am missing some kind of codec or anything. also, i can play divx and other files with mplayer no problem. i've tried checking the parameters for mplayer, but there doesn't seem to be anything to fiddle with which might effect the picture this much.

anyone got any ideas?

cheers,

joe.

[edit]

might be useful to know, i'm using fedora 2 with the latest nvidia drivers, and a geforce 2 gts.
