Some music to ponder over

My music tastes are somewhat strange - many people would find it depressing or frightening - but I like music with life, with soul. That doesn't mean I'm a big Mowtown fan, it means I like sounds that stir and inspire me.

 

Some of the stuff here isn't to everyone's tastes, but it's stuff I often find tranquil and relaxing.

Fields Of the Nephilim - a big fan of theirs from some early days, seen them a few times in concert. Their earlier music began quite raw and gruttal, matured into progressive rock then into Pink Floyd type sounds. After a split and reform, they moved into grunge and dark metal, much of which I find too thrashy for my tastes, but there's the one or two gems amongst their collection.

 

Other stuff I listen to: Linkin Park, Vangelis, Sisters Of Mercy, The Mission, ELO.... told you it was a bit of an odd mix!

Some of the tracks are reminiscent of "horror film music" but others have been used as background music for a documentary on the Roman Empire, another used during a programme on the pyramids, etc - they just conjure up that kind of atmosphere. The pair decided to go their separate ways during the fourth album, but this is one of their recent that's absolute magic. 

Philip Glass - I've been a fan of his works since "CandyMan" but love Koyaanisqatsi, which is video imagery of a trip through time, showing different cultures and their industrial life.

Interesting music. Not something I would listen to myself, but I do like the "Dead can Dance" , the vocal with the peaceful music on the background. I do like the imagery of the Philip Glass video. But I'm not really an organ fan but it does bring a nice effect to the music. I like to listening to peaceful music like that. An example of that is the Gladiator

The first is a bit rocky, but the haunting vocals of the second is what really gripped my attention.

That last one overlaying both of theirs is a wonderfully haunting track. I saw it used as a music score recently (film? TV?) and it added a huge impact to a shocking ending.

That's some pretty cool music, but not something I would listen to regularly just every once in a while. I do listen to trance, psytrance, and goa trance alot.
