As some of you may know I have already tried 30 days with Suse linux Enterprise Desktop 10 and I've covered Ubuntu 7.04 for 30 days to get a decent overview of thosedistros and now it's time to try another one, this time it's PCLinuxOS.

Day 1, starts today, January 11th, 2008.

so here's the first screenshot (after booting from the LiveCD which I downloaded from here > [url=http://www.pclinuxos.com/index.php?option=com_ionfiles&Itemid=28]http://www.pclinuxos.com/index.php?option=...s&Itemid=28

if you go to http://www.pclinuxos.com and choose 'getpclinuxos' you'll get the options to buy, download or try out the community remasters. As I wanted to get stuck in, I chose the download option and burned the ISO to CD. That CD was a PCLinuxOS 2007 liveCD which you can boot off and end up with a nice KDE based desktop.

while i'm not particularly fond of KDE (ok I admit it, k3b rocks !) I moved onward to see how this distro would progress in my hands.

As you can see below from the default livecd bootup, there's a nice KDE desktop with at least one thing some Windows users are used to, and that is the FireFox icon.

My first surprise occured while browsing through the 'PC' menu, and then choosing Internet followed by Remote access. While I expected to find a 'terminal' program I was instead blinded by a familiar Windows Icon (for anyone that uses both Windows and Linux and ssh) called putty. I clicked on it and putty started, I was impressed but also confused, I guess I need to find out exactly what market PCLinuxOS is aimed at (I'm guessing Windows users with some limited linux experience).

Anyways, it was getting late in the night and it was a long week so I decided to get started by clicking on the 'Install PCLinuxOS' icon. that action brought up a Draklive-Install Enhanced wizard, which for Mandrake sorry Mandriva users should be familiar enough, so I did the predictable and clicked on \next'

followed by choosing 'Normal Hard Drive (ide,sata)' and then next. This now gave me the option of removing the Windows Installation that was already there, or for dual booters, use the free space on the Windows partition and why doesn't it spell this out as dual boot.

I chose to dual boot (second option) and after clicking next was given a warning which stated

As this was a test machine and I didn't care about the installation of Windows that was currently on it (Windows XP sp2) I clicked next. Now I was given the option of how much space I should reserve for Windows, as this was a 40gb hdd, I chose half or approx 20gb.

After clicking next, I was informed that because of resizing the partitions, my next boot into Windows would encur some filesystem checks (chkdsk), the next screen that popped up worried me as I can imagine that noobs would not know which window to click on or may panic and give up.

One window told me that a new medium has been detected (20gb Media) and the window directly behind that had a BIG warning symbol on it with

a warning in red which said 'The partition/s you have selected will be formatted. All the data will be wiped. I clicked on next.

This allowed me to click next again to install or to quit (cancel), however the 20gb Media (KDE ....) window was still present in the background.

PCLinuxOS started copying itself from the LiveCD to my computer.

after some time it finished its job and presented me with yet another wizard choice, this time for grub. Strangely the programmers didn't bother to consider long 'hard disc serial' names (look at boot device) so I ended up with a scroll bar which makes the wizard look.... unfinished. Anyway, I went with the defaults but before doing so I clicked on the 'bootloader to use' option only to see that grub was offered with graphical, text and also lilo was offered. Cool.

After this I was displayed with a list of entries on my boot menu so far, which included

I clicked on the Finish button.

Well obviously finish didn't mean 'the end' so the wizard asked me another question, this time it was to set the all important root password

so I set my password and clicked next. After that I was prompted for a user, I entered my real name (anyweb) , and my real password (yeahright).

clicking on accept user, got me to the next stage...of enter a user.

I was done with that so I clicked on 'done'.

Although I was led to believe that the PCLinuxOS team were based somewhere in the US, the 'final' screen I saw in the wizard was a bit weird.

I was told to

If anyone knows how to do the above pelase tell me. While I scratched my head I clicked on finish.

After pressing the power button and being greeted with a reboot option, I chose it. Cool. After the reboot I was indeed presented with a grub menu similar to what I saw in the installation, so I chose windows to boot. This option did get windows to start chkdsk so the PCLinuxOS had described things correctly. Once done checking, windows rebooted, and PCLinuxOS itself, booted (as I made no further selection within the next grub that appeared.

However once it loaded, I could immediatly see that my desktop was set for a really small screen (640x480 perhaps ?)

Ok a big Firefox window, close the tab and you can see some pclinuxOS info.

Great, now at least we remember what OS this was.

Another 30 experiment .. neat :)PCLinuxOS is a respectable enough distribution, I used it only briefly, I am still too attached to Gentoo to move though :)

Day 2.

I decided to make sure I was up to date before doing any configuring with PCLinuxOS so as root I ran

this prompted me to allow it to download and install 251MB of updates so i answered

once done I set about configuring my PCLinuxOS box (an old Dell Latitude D600, 512mb ram, 40gb hdd).

First thing to fix was the screen resolution, it was running at 640x480 (and this maybe because I had an external LCD connected. to do this I right clicked on the desktop and chose configure desktop, followed by display. Unfortunately that only listed 640x480 as an available resolution with no more to choose from, so I needed to find out why. I removed the external vga cable (for the external LCD) and restarted X (ctrl_alt_backspace).

big mistake, now all I get is a cli login screen, and when I login and try startx I get a long screen of info which ends with 'no screens found'.

After some googling I try the following:-

replacing xorg.conf (in /etc/X11) with the one called xorg.conf.backup

didn't work,

tried using ATI's propritary linux driver from here > http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/linux...adeon.html which perhaps telllingly does not list support for the video card that this machine has which is an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000.

That didn't work either (driver installed fine, but I still get no screens found.

I tried running XFdrake --auto and still no luck, so I'm now on day two with a cli based 'modern linux distro' currently listed as number one on distrowatch.com.

I'm confused to say the least....

Day 3.

ok last night I tried many things to get X to work, and all failed miserably. Today I booted the PCLinuxOS livecd and copied /etc/X11xorg.conf to a usb key, I then copied that back to my PClinuxOs installation, but it made no difference I still get the errors when trying to startx.

After much poking around .. I know what your problem seems to be!

Basically when you apt-get update it updated packages to a version that didn't match the version of X. Which means that you most likely need to update your "distribution" files as well. These are effectively the system files.

So do:

apt-get dist-upgrade

This is a thing that has happened to me under Ubuntu before but it didn't effect X. Hopefully this will solve your issues.

Day 4

has resolved the X issues, great but imho those issues shouldn't have arisen in the first place.

After a reboot however, (i was away from the pc) it just sat at the X login screen and I couldnt type my password for either root or anyweb no matter how I clicked on them (it just said login failed) pressing caps lock however did tell me that caps lock was pressed so I knew the keyboard was working, i had to use the mouse to click on system-menu and restart X, after that I was able to login correctly and post this

anyweb, the reason why you have had problems is down to installing mixed packages. If you installed most of PCLinuxOS from a bootable CD and the apt repositories (/etc/apt/sources.list on debian) are for a newer version of the distro that was on that CD there will be conflicts, this has happened to me quite a lot on debian before i knew what i was doing. Its IMPORTANT to check to make sure your using the correct repositories what match the version of your running distro before you perform any kind software update. If the repositories are for a newer version of your currently distro you would either have to change them to match the distro version your running or perform a apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade.

yes, except that I didnt change any repo's at all, or mixed packages, I just issued an

apt-get upgrade

command which on any apt based system should perform an upgrade of the installed packages. I would assume that PCLinuxOS would have configured their repo's correctly so that this could be accomplished, but maybe not.

anyways, I'm now installing PCLinuxOS on another machine here for laffs to get a better idea of the distro, except this time i'm doing a dist-upgrade to be sure to be sure.

Day 4 - continued.

ok i've installed PCLinuxOS on another machine and this time i went for dist-upgrade, no problems so far but I couldn't get kopete to work either with msn or gaim, and so installed pidgin (which i normally use anyway)

the default font in Xchat looks very different to Fedora so i'll have to take a look at the desktop/font settings

I surfed over to youtube and could watch videos without having to do anything at all, so it seems that PCLinuxOS has flash preconfigured, nice !

in addition, I could play this mp3 without being prompted to load any codecs, this is also nice.

indeed, I checked what plugins were preinstalled (on firefox 2.0.0.11, well that was after an update mentioned above but it did ship with 2.0.0.3)
