what version should i grab? - slater - 2008-04-21 ok i am tired of windows... though wanna keep it aswell as linux.. but idk what to get my laptop build is a Dell inspiron b130 it runs on: Intel Celeron 1.5GHz 256 SDRAM Intel mobile extreme graphics and it currently has Windows XP home edition i'm looking at ubuntu cos i want a basic OS n all since m still a noob... but i wanna know what to get for a dual loader n how i'd use it.. so i can still run windows n i want to be able to run my messengers(aim, yahoo, n windows live) on there which i know i can do yahoo.. but idk about aim n windows live if you can help with that too... much appreciated thanks what version should i grab? - anyweb - 2008-04-21 ubuntu will allow you to dual boot as part of the whole process to get a better overview of what ubuntu is and what it can do (including screenshots) see here pidgin can handle your msn/aim/yahoo and more, it's a very capable messenger client., however if you want webcam chat and all that then you'll probably have your work cut out for you cheers anyweb what version should i grab? - slater - 2008-04-21 alright then... now what about my wireless? i am always away from my router so i can't go wired will my card be carried to ubuntu? the card i use is a built in dell conextant i believe... i'm not on it atm so i can't say for sure more info as time passes what version should i grab? - anyweb - 2008-04-22 if you have an intel wireless card then it'll be easy as pie, if its a dell broadband card (broadcom) then you'll likely have some problems, the conexant you are referring to is only your onboard 56k modem Code: lspci as root will list all available hardware in your laptop once linux is installed i'd recommend that in your initial configuration and setup phase that you have a wired internet conenction in place, you can talk to us live on IRC via the efnet server (see my signature below) and we can do our best to advise you at that point (once you have linux installed) cheers anyweb what version should i grab? - slater - 2008-04-22 alright, and you said i can dual boot windows aswell? as in the booter comes with it? cos i still got a lot of windows programs.. |
