5.7 -i386 won't work after update - borgweare - 2011-10-25

Hi there,

In case you can’t tell I’m new to Linux.

I am trying to setup my own web server with Kloxo

(A cpanel alternative).

I installed Cent OS 5.7-i386 server, and ran the GUI

(startx) and all went well.

But when I ran the updates and restarted the PC and go to

Start the GUI I just get a blank screen.

I have done some reading on all the forums out there, but far

I have had no luck.

Can still use the Command Prompt (if you call it that in the Linux’s

World?) But would like to use the GUI. (Bit like using DOS instead of windows

And I’m over those days lol).

The hardware I am using to test this on is

Dell Optiplex 745 2.0GHz core 2 duo

1 GB Ram

40 GB hard drive

DVD Rom

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3000

Thanks to all. :)

It sounds like the update may have brought down a new module (driver) for your graphics card, which is breaking Xorg.

A good place to look is: /var/log/X.org.log - try checking the last few entries in there to see what errors they show.

If you use "startx" and get no display but can still use CTRL+ALT+F1...F9 and switch back to a text console then that implies your xorg.conf has been overwritten by one with settings incompatible with your monitor. In that case, look for an xorg.conf.backup in the /etc/X11 directory - if you move your xorg.conf out of the way and copy the backup version into place, you may be able to start your GUI with the older settings.

Thanks will have a look at the log,

I have try the CTRL+ALT+F1...F9 but screen just stays blank.

But I will have a look before I try starting the GUI.

Thanks for your help, will let you know how I get on.

Just rolled back to before I updated.

I tried your way of using the text console, but my commands knowledge is

of linux is not great.

So I found just when you first boot the computer up Cent OS gives you about

Three seconds to enter a menu where you can roll back.

Thanks again for your help.:)

By the way are there any good books you would recommed on Cent OS and Linux's commands.

Thanks.
