New to Linux (Fedora) Questions - FedoraNewbie - 2006-11-05


Hi, I'm new to linux (Fedora) at the moment (1:25PM GMT) I am downloading the Fedora Core 6 "Zod", this will be my first time using linux properly, (been a windows guy for to long), I've a couple of questions if someone could answer that'd be great, cheers.

 

Q1: Can I play DVDs out of the box (just put the disk in and watch)

Q2: Can I burn CDs/DVDs out of the box

Q3: Will OpenOffice come on the DVDiso or will I need to download/install it seperatally

Q4: Can I do photo editing (like adobe photoshop)

Q5: Can I play MP3s

Q6: Can I play .rmvb's or another format like .wmv

Q7: Is updating fedora as easy as updating windows/mac-osx

Q8: Can I download torrents on fedora just like on windows

I am assuming your using Fedora Core 6, first you will want to install livna repos as root type:

rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-6.rpm




 

A1) As root type:

yum install xine




 

A2) Make sure you have cdrecord utility installed. I would also recommend

you use k3b to burn your data as it will be much easier.

 

A3) OpenOffice is on the DVD

 

A4) You can use The Gimp

A7) to update your software just type:

In Fedora Core 6 you should be notified if any patches are available.

 

A8) Yes. You can install the Azureus bittorrent client or as root type:

One quick question, I haven't installed Fedora yet, what's different between fedora and windows, xp, i've been a windows guy for many years now and wonder if switching to fedora, linux is a good idea.

you can dual boot fedora and xp and have the best of both worlds

 

simply partition your hard drive to have at least 10 gb free in windows xp, then install fedora on that free partition, it'll manage the autopartitioning and update the boot loader as well so you can dual boot
