File access log/audit and alerts - FC6Secure6 - 2007-03-21

I am runnning into problems with building a log for files (such as text files) to show when they were accessed (read updated or deleted); I have tried using Seedit http://seedit.sourceforge.net/, Snare http://www.intersectalliance.com/projects/Snare/ , and few other small utilities with no success on building the logs. Does anyone know of any other utilities that might help me with this or maybe a guide on what I might be doing wrong with Seedit or Snare, I believe my relative lack of knowledge concerning Linux is the main reason I am having such a hard time. Also I am trying to find a way to be alerted in case these files are accessed by someone who should not have access, I am not quite sure how to be alerted and I was hoping someone might have some suggestions. Any help is a appreciated, thank you.
