fix the Fn Keys on Asus Eee Pc 1015B
Posted by: CellarDweller - 2011-12-27, 06:43 AM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (4)

Hello!

I've got the Asus Eee PC 1015B netbook and running Fedora 16. And I am facing the following problems:

  • function keys aren't working at all

The Fn-Keys for adjusting speakers, brightness of the screen and such stuff aren't responding at all. They work on the (pre-installed Windows 7) and do what they should do under Open SuSe.

  • sound issues

I had no sound - the system found both sound-devices and the appropriate drivers were loaded. Only in VLC player I was able to get any sound because only there I was able to definitely select *this* or *that* soundcard.

After installing *Battle for Wesnoth* and giving it a frustrated try to play it without sound I suddenly got the whole soundsystem blasting at full level. Now everything works fine - but don't ask me how.

Which is somehow frustrating because I was really trying to figure this out - and then it worked by itself. Which might bear the risk that it also might begone another moment.

  • screen brightness

As mentioned above - I can't adjust the brightness of the LCD screen. I already installed *Jupiter* and it does what it should do, like en-/disabling power-save modes etc, - though the FN keys still don't work. And the screen at full brightness becomes really painful over some time.

I looked-up this issues in different forums and internet-searches, and it seems to be a common problem.

My guess also is that this problems are quite independent from the Desktop Environment - at least they are present in LXDE and XFCE4 and dwm.

So my question is:

where can I adjust the screen brightness via shell?

I don't need to raise or lower it very often, because I really like to work with a dimmed screen, don't watch much video on this and don't work in the graphics field on this netbook.

Thanks in advance for your support and all your efforts!

Kernel Panic boot SL live dvd
Posted by: inittux - 2011-12-22, 09:29 PM - Forum: Kernel Related - Replies (9)

I finally got my netbook. Nice and small. I create a bootable usb using sl live usb creator and I tested it out on my laptop and it boots without any problems. I then tried to boot from my usb on my netbook and I am able to get in to the grub menu and as soon as I select boot from LiveDVD SL starts to load and then I get the error: Kernel Panic - not syncen: Attempting to kill init! I'm pretty sure it's some type incompatible hardware thing. I google all around, but I only found answers like made a new live usb, compiled a custom kernel,(can't do that if my os isn't installed) checking bios settings etc. I'm kindda out of options. Any ideas?

  installing linux from usb
Posted by: inittux - 2011-12-19, 09:19 AM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (2)

I'm going to be installing SL from a usb device once I get my netbook. I've found various ways to install it.

1. http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Ha...Media.html I've tried it but doesn't seem to work.

2. https://fedorahosted.org/liveusb-creator/ Not sure if you're able to use the full install iso and if not if you can install from the livecd.

3. http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ Read on serveral forums that it should work

Anyone have any experience with these, if so please share your experiences.

  my ftp server
Posted by: inittux - 2011-12-08, 09:13 PM - Forum: FTP Server - Replies (11)

Since I'm playing with ftp now and installed vsftp service and got it working. I'll just post my experiences with it here. I heard pure-ftpd is also a good one and I also came across proFTPd. May have to have a look at the other two as well. Just to see and feel the differences. I have it setup using ssl so my data is encrypted :)

  Encrypting SMTP
Posted by: isey78 - 2011-12-05, 04:54 PM - Forum: Redhat - Replies (1)

Hi all,

I only have a basic understanding of what I have and what I want, so I hope I can provide enough info.

We have a Linux Server (Dell T610) running RHLE 4. For the most part, our software vendor requires this type of server for their software. They also provide some basic support & 90% of the time they are the ones who touch the server, because I nor anyone else in our building know anything more than some elementary Linux.

Anyway, they setup a SMTP mail server using one of my google accounts that basically just sends mail with an attachment. Pretty handy.

We're currently trying to get a module they offer that sends letters to our customers via email instead of snail mail (which is very expensive when you muliply the price of a stamp by 3k-4k each day). The problem is the attachment is just a plain text file. Obviously, this a major security issue since most of what we deal with contains confidential/personal (SSN, DOB's, etc.) info.

On to my point! We want those emails secured in some way & our vendor claims they cannot provide this feature. Is there something I can add to our server (or have the software vendor add probably haha) that will encrypt messages being sent from the SMTP mailer?

I would also settle for a similar service that is already provided by an online vendor such as Zixmail for example, however in-house would be first preference)

Thanks

Rocky

  Wallpaper Changer Wally
Posted by: inittux - 2011-12-04, 05:02 PM - Forum: Linux News - Replies (5)

Ever get tired of looking at the same wallpaper for days, tired of having to change it yourself? Well, I did and I went to search for a solution. I came across good wallpaper changer. There are deb, rpm, and even dmg packages available for installation. All you have to do is install the package and you are ready to go. What configuration options are there? You can set it to automatically change your wallpapers x minutes, x seconds, x hours. You can select how you want them display: scaled, centred or scaled and cropped, etc. You can select folders and sub folders from your local pc. Still feeling lazy? and don't want to search for wallpapers yourself? No worries there's a setting for that too. Where you can select google or yahoo and several others images hosters too to load wallpapers from key search words or phrases. Here's the link to Wally if you want to get started :)

  Notebook
Posted by: inittux - 2011-12-01, 03:11 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (6)

I've decided I'm going to wait for buying my server until the hard disk prices go down. Until after the new year.

And I might just only buy 2x500GB I never use that much data. Can always replace the hard disks if I do.

Might as well get myself a christmas present so I'll be buying a notebook. I'm thinking of buying this one

What you think?

Nice and small, easy for travelling. And I'll be able to try out installing SL from a usb drive.
