I left college in 1995, where I had been studying to be a Graphic Designer. My dad wanted the best for me and offered to get me my first computer. It was an Apple 2cx. I screwed it up almost immediately, and it never worked quite right. I was never able to use it for its true purpose, and, it was about as useful as a paperweight. Every once in awhile it'd boot up, give me hope and go back to useless. I got to the point where I just hated Mac. Every once in awhile, someone would give me an older Mac and it'd make me nuts. I'd keep this one Mac locked in the closet as a way of punishing it. I hated iPods; because, the interface resembled Mac too much.
A friend gave me an Optiplex SX260 with a missing HD. He suggested that I make a Linux Pendrive. I started with Mint, then tried SUSE, then a few different Ubuntus led me to Xubuntu 10. I tried Xubuntu 11, but, the Optiplex freaked and crashed. I'm back with 10.
Linux and I have a love/hate relationship; but, its far better than my Unix relationship, though I have a jailbroken iPhone. A few of my friends are IT guys that've given me just about all that they can give. Recently, one of them suggested that I use the repository to find a package that'll do what iTunes will do. I thought, crap, what's a repository again? So, I Googled it, and, I found this place. Bear with me, I want to do better.

Salve
as a noob that i am, im searching for a community for linux beginners so i found this forum and find it nice - so im here now.
my interessting about linux startet since i startet with an android Smartphone and hate all the Bloat into the system and beginning with rooting and costumizing. then more and more im beginning to test some Distributions on mi Acer Notebook, but have a lot of problems with installation, Wireless connetions, mounting Harddrives and understand how to manage this things - but im not given up - and now found Linux Mint and it works - i also begann to understand the differences betwen a Linux Shell and a Dos and the installation Prozess. And now, i dont wona work with any other OS anymore... more and more im beginning to enjoy the possibiliys from Linux. So i hope i found here good inputs for use my linux.
outside from computer neding (on a noob level ;) ) im interesting about Music (also and most and more and more free Music) and politics (like the Pirate Party and left political ideas and hate rassist and every form of discrimination) and Philosophy (my favorite philosophers are Nietzsche, Adorno and Foucault, but i also like middle age philosophers and the ancient greek)
so, thats a bit about me. And, if my english is a liitle bit foolish, its because im from switzerland and living in germany
so thats it

Hey guys,
my name is Adam and I am new to linux, and when I say new..I mean NEW!!! I've tinkered around with it a little bit, read some online help posts to get some things working... but it was mainly copy paste stuff.... does anyone recommend somewhere I can go to learn what all the commands do??
for instance I have used sudo command before, but don't really know what it means and I wouldn't know how to use it if I needed to unless I was reading it online.
as far as experience, I am in IT support, supporting mac and windows computers both hardware and software, but I want to learn how to use linux and possibly use linux as a server for files, web, and email. right now, I have Ubuntu, is there one that is recommended? I Read that I should start out with fedora though, will it be that much different?
I have been through this site many times before now, I don't know why i just didn't sign up way before this... well anyways, thanks in advance guys/gals!
-Adam

| wifi interface wlan0 shows about 10-15% more traffic than VPN ppp0 |

I tried doing a search for vpn but it wont let me search under four characters so i will be so bold as to start a new topic.
I've been exploring the wonderful world of linux for a while now and since lately i got myself a vpn connection from ipredator which i use at all times when connected to the internet
I've been doing some scripting to have all relevant processes killed and the network disconnect in case the vpn goes down, i guess i'm just a bit paranoid. But all that works just fine.
Now i've been monitioring traffic on both ppp0 and wlan0 interfaces with this nifty little tool called ifstat.
What i notice is that at any time i am connected and traffic goes through the ppp0 interface i get about 10-15% more through my wlan0 interface. I have no clue where to ask about this and can't find the keywords to google the relevant information.
So, if anyone can help me out here? is it normal to have that much more traffic on the wi-fi than what goes actually through the vpn connection? Is it to do with the fact that the data's being encrypted or something? Anything to make me wiser about it or point me in the direction where i can find more info about this specific situation would be greatly appreciated.
I put a small portion of the output of ifstat here on pastebin : http://pastebin.com/9NEa8Zar
Go easy on me, i know a bit or two about computers but this is completely new to me.
Also, i can't seem to find anything about firewall rules to have a single program/process blocked from using anything but the ppp0 interface, all i can find is allow ip-ranges and open-close ports, anything for dummies on that subject would be most welcome as well

I just came across a problem myself that Linux installer will only see one of my disks after making a RAID array. And I didn't think of downloading any tools that are useful to have when working with Linux. So starting a list of what would be useful tools for when working with Linux.
List of Useful tools:
1. bootable usb/dvd with liveCD/DVD or other bootable Linux distro

I am unable to setup ushare to work with xbox 360.
I have been following the steps in the link below as well watching some videos on youtube.
http://stevejenkins.com/blog/2011/02...ox-360-or-ps3/
<div><iframe width="480" height="270" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zg6qTL-gvJw?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true"></iframe></div>
But still when i start up the xbox, i cannot see the server name listed under videos. I have named the server Media Server.
After following all steps and running the command ushare -x, it comes with found 199 files and subdirectories but still nothing on the xbox. even tried stopping and starting ushare service on linux machine.
what am i missing out.
