Irssi + Hybrid Operscript Collection
I like Irssi and BitchX equally, but since I spent time into configuring BitchX and I'm using it now, I voted for it. :P
Irssi has an advantage over BitchX, they're the out-of-the-box windowing features, it's so easy to use for a beginner on text mode IRC clients.

i must admit i like irc clients with a gui, so it's xchat for me :)in windows and linux
