Hello,

I have a relatively low spec machine PIII 600 192Mb RAM and I'd like to set it up do do nothing more than play mp3s, WMAs, video files (from a Windows machine on the network) and perhaps play DVDs also. Ideally I'd like to be able to turn the machine on, have it boot up as quickly as possible straight into a media player program. I know very little about Linux and wondererd if this would be possible? Can you cut the OS right down to just what I need? If so can anyone point me towards a beginners guide on how to do this and suggest a distribution I could use?

welcome to the forums, how big is the hard drive and what video card do you have ?

20Gb Hard drive but can get a bigger one if needed.

Not sure what video card is in there but that can be changed if necessary too.

well you could install fedora core release 5 on it and remove uneeded apps after the install, should be easy to do

 

then use this guide [/url][url=<___base_url___>/index.php?showtopic=2209][/url][url=<___base_url___>/index.php?showtopic=2209]https://www.linux-noob.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2209 to install all the codecs you need to play wmv videos etc,

Thanks for getting me started, just looking at downloading it and it's on 5 discs, does this not mean that it is a relatively large OS that would be hard to trim down? Also how could I get boot times down?

you should be ok with the first 2 cds

 

download them, and it s quite easy to trim down what is/what is not needed (dont install openoffice for example, takes nearly 200mb)

 

the installation looks like this

and on this screenshot you can choose 'customise now'

 

to change what you want to install/not install

 

make sure to remove the check in 'office/productivity'
